Safe Weight Loss Tips for Kenyans: A Comprehensive Guide

While losing weight can be a challenging journey, with the right approach, it can be incredibly rewarding. For Kenyans looking to shed some extra kilograms safely and effectively, there are several main strategies and factors to keep in mind. For instance, you need to adopt healthy eating habits and incorporate regular physical activity into your daily routine to succeed. Here are some tried-and-tested strategies and tips that can help you achieve your weight loss goals without too much difficulty. Start with Realistic Goals Before you embark on any weight loss journey, it’s critical that you set certain realistic and achievable goals. Instead of aiming for a drastic transformation overnight, you should focus on making gradual, changes to your lifestyle that are also sustainable. Aim to lose 1 kilogram per week, as this is considered a safe and sustainable rate of weight loss. In other words, you should set small, achievable goals that will keep you motivated and help you maintain your progress in the long run. Prioritize Nutrition Nutrition plays a crucial role in weight loss success. Avoid crash diets or extreme fasting and focus on nourishing your body with wholesome, nutrient-dense foods. In Kenya, there are several traditional dishes such as ugali, Githeri, Mokimo, seafood, traditional vegetables, and ngwashe, which are popular staples. While these foods can be enjoyed in moderation, it’s important to incorporate a variety of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains into your diet for ideal health and weight management. Food on different plates Food Portion Control Apart from settling for nutritious foods, you should also pay attention to the portion sizes you partake per sitting in order to lose weight. Unfortunately, the Kenyan cuisine often features generous portions, which can contribute to overeating. Therefore, it’s upon you to be mindful of serving the right sizes and listening to your body’s hunger cues. Always try to fill half of your plate with vegetables, some lean protein, and some whole grains or starchy vegetables such as sweet potatoes. Aim to eat smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day as it helps curb hunger pangs and prevent overeating. Stay Hydrated Drink an adequate amount of water for overall good health, which can also help support your weight loss efforts. Additionally, keep yourself hydrated always as water helps flush out toxins, aids digestion, and helps curb cravings. Drink at least 8-10 glasses of water every day, and if possible, exchange the sugary beverages you love so much such as soda and juice for herbal tea or just water. Add some lemon or cucumber slices to your water to enhance its flavor without adding extra calories. Man drinking water Be Active Engage in regular physical activity to help burn calories, build lean muscle, and improve your overall fitness. You can easily incorporate exercise into your daily routine without doing anything complicated or time-consuming. Spend at least 30 minutes of moderate-intense exercise at least four to five times a week. This could include taking a brisk walk, jogging, cycling, dancing, or even participating in group fitness classes. Find activities that you enjoy during your free time and make them a regular part of your schedule. Have Enough Sleep Get enough quality sleep to facilitate your weight loss efforts and boost your overall health. Lack of sleep can disrupt your body’s hormone levels, reduce motivation to exercise, and increase cravings for unhealthy foods. Sleep for about 6-8 hours uninterrupted each night, and establish a particular bedtime routine that can help signal the body that it’s bedtime. Before bed, avoid stimulants such as caffeine and electronics that can lower your sleep quality. Manage Stress Chronic stress can sabotage weight loss efforts as it triggers emotional eating and disrupts hormone balance. Find healthy ways to manage stress for your physical and mental well-being. Incorporate stress-reducing activities into your daily routine, such as spending time in nature, meditation, yoga, or deep breathing exercises. Additionally, try various self-care activities that bring you joy and relaxation, such as reading a book, taking a bath, or spending time with loved ones. Lady sleeping Seek Support Because the weight loss journey can be challenging, try not to go it alone. Seek support from close friends, family members, or a professional coach who can offer you the encouragement, accountability, and guidance you need every step of the way. Join a weight loss support group or online community where you can connect with others who are on a similar journey. Share your experiences, challenges, and successes with others to help keep you motivated and inspired. Be Patient and Tenacious Remember that weight loss is a journey, not a destination. While there will be ups and downs along the way, consistency and persistence are your pillars of support. Celebrate your progress, no matter how small, and be kind to yourself if you experience setbacks. Make sustainable lifestyle changes that you can maintain for the long term, and avoid pursuing quick fixes or fad diets. If you’re dedicated, patient, and able to persevere, you can achieve your weight loss goals and enjoy a healthier, happier life. Final Thoughts Safe weight loss requires that you adopt a balanced approach that includes nutritious eating, regular physical activity, adequate sleep, stress management, and support from others. You simply need to make small, sustainable changes to your lifestyle in order to achieve lasting results that will improve your overall health. Remember to be patient with yourself, stay focused on your goals, and celebrate your progress along the way.

Activist Okiya Omtatah Moves to Court to Block Mps From Debating Finance Bill, Faces Backlash From Uda Lawmakers

Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah has moved to court to block lawmakers from discussing and ratifying the taxation proposals made by President William Ruto’s government for the 2024/25 budget. According to Omtatah and his counterpart Eliud Karanja, parliament has erred in focusing on the finance bill for the year 2024/25, before debating and approving the Appropriations Act, 2024. This goes against the laid-out procedure. The Appropriation Act is currently in parliament. Its approval by the National Assembly is important for financing the Kenya Kwanza government’s sh3.9 trillion budget for the financial year starting in July. The bill had its first reading in parliament on May 13th. If the National Assembly passes the new taxation proposals, the Value Added Tax (VAT) on bread will be increased. Additionally, there will be an increase in excise taxes on M-pesa transactions, airtime, bank transfers, cigarettes, and spirits. The Ruto government is trying to raise an additional sh 323 billion in the next financial year, starting in July. A 16 percent VAT on bread will increase the cost of a 400g loaf by at least 10 shillings. In the bill, there is also a proposal for introducing a 2.5 percent motor vehicle circulation tax. Here, owners of motor vehicles will cough up to ksh100,000 annually to keep driving their cars on Kenyan roads. Jane Kagiri who Criticised Omtatah Omtatah Getting Pushback from Ruto Loyalists  UDA lawmakers and loyalists have not taken kindly to Omtatah going to court. Laikipia Women Rep, Jane Kagiri has accused the Busia Senator of misleading the people of Kenya on the Finance Bill. According to Ms. Kagiri, Omtatah’s claims that the Finance Bill was introduced prematurely for debate in the National Assembly are, “patently false and misleading.” Omtatah is Not New to Controversy This is not the first time the activist has moved to court against the government. Three weeks ago, he was in court to end the mobile termination rates (MTR) that have been introduced by the government through the Communications Commission of Kenya. The rates were introduced last year in November. According to Omtatah, the new rates are arbitrary and among the highest in the East African region. Setting the new MTR charges in November, the CCK announced that the new rates will be sh0.41 per minute, a reduction from the previous sh 0.58 per minute. But according to the Busia lawmaker, the rate is still seven times over the recommended rate of sh 0.06. MTR are the charges a telecommunication company levies on its competitors when they end their calls on its network.

His lifeless body was later found in the ‘death zone,’ an area which is above 8,000 meters. According to Everest Today reports, Cheruiyot’s body was found above the mountain’s summit. In their condolence message to the family, Everest Today recognizes Cheruiyot’s indomitable will and passion for mountain climbing as inspiration. Cheruiyot with his mountain guide, Mr Nawang Sherpa lost contact with the Bishop Rock zone. The two were missing for several hours before Cheruiyot’s body was found. However, Sherpa is still missing, and his fate was unknown as of Thursday morning. Cheruiyot taking a selfie while climbing Mount Everest Cheruiyot’s Last Moments and Determination The 40-year-old Cheruiyot was a banker at Kenya Commercial Bank and a dedicated mountain climber. He was accomplished and enthusiastic, having successfully reached the peak of Mount Everest more than ten times before dying in the heroic mission. Cheruiyot was well prepared for the mission both physically and emotionally. His social media posts earlier showed how much he was looking forward to accomplishing the mission. Part of the posts read: “Finally. Tonight we head up. Summit Rotation. After 10 Basecamp days. But there were parties in honor of successful summits.” The mountain climber was also well aware of the risks that awaited him in the mission. He clearly outlined the risks he was likely to face and how he was prepared to tackle them. “My plan a no-oxygen attempt comes with its special preparations and risks, physically my body is ready. On the other risks, I’m taking the following measures; Cold Without oxygen one is much more susceptible to frostbite. So I have; Hands: A pair of heated gloves, a pair of heated mittens with a spare set of batteries. Climbers at Mount Everest Feet: Two pairs of heated socks with a spare set of batteries.MedsI’m susceptible to HAPE so I’m armed with Nifedipine. For HACE I have Dexamethasone.  And Acetazolamide. Manaslu taught me well, having had an episode of HAPE and no meds.” While others have successfully climbed Mount Everest without oxygen, they usually turn to air back up once they reach above sea level (6,000 meters). For Cheruiyot, having supplementary oxygen would not be a good challenge. Cheruiyot was determined to see how well her body could cope under the extreme altitudes. Unfortunately, his pursuit to test the limitations of the human body ended in his death. A Romanian climber Gabriel Tavara who was also on the ill-fated mission was found dead inside Camp III on Tuesday.

Harambee Stars’ Preparedness Ahead of Their World Cup Qualifying Match

The Kenyan soccer team, Harambee Stars, is earnestly preparing for their World Cup qualifying matches. They will play Burundi on June 3, 2024, as part of the FIFA World Cup, Qualification CAF, Group F match. Later on, they will play Cote d’Ivoire on June 11, 2024. Both Games will be played at Bingu National Stadium, Lilongwe, Malawi. Since Kenya does not have stadiums that meet FIFA standards, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) had to find a venue to hold the World Cup qualifier matches. During their second day of residential training, Coach Engin Farat said the players were familiar with the facilities in the venue and the warm welcome from the Malawians. Although the team will miss home support, Farat is optimistic about Malawi. “We know the stadium and training field, plus the people there were kind to us. They hosted us very well.” Coach Farat. He continued to lament how sports infrastructure has been neglected for more than 50 years and how shameful it is for the country to host its matches in Malawi. Coach Firat Siro “We don’t have good fields for training; we don’t even have one international field for training.” He continued to lament, “Afcon is coming up, but this problem stays here. It’s not a problem for today or tomorrow. We have to build something for the future of the country.” On March 26, 2024, Kenya won a friendly tournament at the same venue by beating Malawi 4-0 and Zimbabwe 3-1 in the final. Coach Engin Farat will jet out with 25 players and expects foreign-based players to join them in Malawi. They will leave the country on June 2. Five players might lose the games due to injuries and passport issues. The foreign-based players include defender Daniel Anyembe, midfielder Richard Odada, striker Michal Olunga, Eric Ouma, and Joseph Okumu. The coach added that he would not take risks but assess players, especially those with injuries like Joseph Okumu, before setting the squad to tackle Burundi. “I can only say we will do our best. We will be prepared; I believe sometimes you need luck…” he added. The team looks forward to coming home with good scores, but playing a home game in a foreign country is a big disadvantage. Currently, Kenya is number three with three points, while Burundi ranks fourth in the Group with three points. Cote d’Ivoire and Gabon are in positions one and two, respectively, while Gambia and Seychelles rank fifth and sixth in the Group.

What is Next for Chelsea: Seeking an Innovative Coach

Mauricio Pochettino has left Chelsea, after just one season in office as the head coach. He becomes the third permanent manager to be terminated under Todd Boehly and BlueCo.  This means that Chelsea are now looking for the sixth man to be in the coaching area and manage a match in two years. The 52-year-old Argentine, led Chelsea to finish in sixth position in the Premier League and thus European football, having guided the Blues the Carabao Cup final and FA Cup semi-final. He managed 51 Chelsea games last season, winning 26 of them and totting up a 50.90% win ratio. Although there were tensions behind the scenes regarding operations both on and off the pitch, the separation was amicable. Chelsea fans are shocked by the abrupt decision, particularly after the team’s strong performance in the latter part of the season. Pochettino did not manage to earn the trust of the owners as they had several clashes in the coaching pitch. In west London, Boehly and BlueCo are now searching for a new permanent manager, as transfer plans are already in motion, and there’s a possibility that some players in Pochettino’s plans might be sold for profit. Currently, there are four men on the Blue’s shortlist who are willing to replace Pochettino. The applications for the coach position are estimated to increase. Pochettino training with Chelsea Players Thomas Frank Frank has consistently received praise since assuming control of Brentford. The Bees didn’t perform as well this season as they’d expected, ending up 16th after finishing ninth the previous year. Despite this, Frank’s reputation is still very strong. Frank and Brentford always rely on data, which will surely impress Boehly and Clearlake. Sebastian Hoeness Sebastian has done a marvelous job in Bundesliga.Hoeness steered Stuttgart to second place in the German league, while Bayern Munich slipped to third on the last day of the season. Stuttgart had the Bundesliga’s second-best defense, trailing only Bayer Leverkusen, who had a quite impressive season. Kieran McKenna Another Championship manager has grabbed the attention, not just of Chelsea, but also several other clubs seeking a new leader – particularly Brighton. McKenna led Ipswich Town from League One to the Premier League in two years. He worked as a first time coach at Tottenham and Manchester United, where he earned a lot of respect. Enzo Maresca A former pupil of Pep Guardiola has achieved remarkable success in just one season with Leicester City. He guided the Foxes to Championship victory, securing their return to the Premier League as champions. The owners of Chelsea witnessed Maresca’s capabilities firsthand during an FA Cup match this season. Arguably, Leicester deserved better than their 4-2 loss on that day.

We Will Demonstrate Every Wednesday, Medical Lab Officers Vows

It has been 50 days since the medical laboratory technicians started their strike. Yet there is no hope for a return-to-work dialogue in sight. The officials under the Kenya National Union of Medical Laboratory Officers (KNUMNO) accused the county Governments and the health ministry of looking down upon their work and failing to formulate a recognition agreement, yet the officers have met all the requirements. “We still have class 8 Dropout and form four leavers doing HIV tests. They are the ones operating VCT centers and private institutions.” Nicholas Odipo, Chairman, KNUMLO. They accuse the National and county Governments of defying a 2019 court order. The order prohibited the Ministry of Health from employing nonmedical laboratory officers in any health facility. Unfortunately, the hired nonmedical officers continue to run tests and operate without qualifications. The officers have vowed to continue with the demonstrations every Wednesday until their demands are met. The ongoing strike has left patients stranded in levels two and one hospitals. The grievances of the medical laboratory technicians are multifaceted. They include poor working conditions, a shortage of staff, a lack of opportunities for career advancement, and inadequate compensation. Furthermore, the technicians are advocating for permanent and pensionable terms of service. Medical Lap officers protesting infron of the ministry of health building The county governments are accused of paying the officers salary from Ksh 15,000 which the union cite is very low. Medical laboratory technicians hold a pivotal role in the healthcare system. They are instrumental in assisting with diagnoses through the administration of lab tests. Moreover, they actively participate, alongside other medical professionals, in various procedures. The absence of these crucial medical laboratory technicians has not only strained healthcare but also disrupted the workflow in hospitals. This disruption has led to potential worsening of patients’ health conditions and an increased rate of mortality. Additionally, patients are now compelled to seek alternative treatment in private institutions, significantly impacting their financial situation. “The patients being booked for dialysis, elective CS, and major operations can’t get these services. We are the people who prepare blood during surgery and tests and diagnose a lot of diseases. Currently, what is being done at the hospitals is guesswork.” Pius Nyakundi, Secretary General, KNUMLO. Unfortunately, the employer is not yet ready to have a constructive dialogue and offer sustainable solutions. Neither is the council of Governors ready to discuss the grievances and ensure the well-being of the laboratory officers and the patient.

KWS Hunting Down Lioness on the Loose in Rongai

The residents of Elmeut Village, Rongai, woke up to shocking CCTV footage of a lioness jumping over a wall and getting out carrying a dog. According to the residents, the lioness had killed six of their dogs in a week. Before seeing the footage, the residents were unaware of what was happening to their dogs, which kept disappearing. A lioness rooming around in the neighboring has posed a serious security threat to the neighborhood. Their main concern is their security when coming home at night and in the morning when their children should be going to school. Kenya Wildlife Society spokesperson Paul Jinaro confirmed the incident on Tuesday night and urged residents to be careful, especially at night. Jinaro assured Kenyans that the Human-Wildlife Conflict (HWC) team had been dispatched to hunt down the dangerous lioness identified as Makena. The HWC team is working with a backup from the Problem Animal Management Unit (PAMU) to patrol the locality in search of the lioness. According to KWS, the lioness is not nearby but is suspected to be hiding her curbs in a different location. The team is following footprints, trying to spot blood stains and any presence of curbs that can indicate that the lioness might be in the area. The Nairobi National Park gate KWS has also confirmed the presence of wildlife in the Rongai and Kitengela areas following heavy rains. The spokesperson confirms that the predatory animals migrate from the Nairobi National Park to human settlements like Rongai, Kitengela, and the larger Kajiado county in search of food. KWS confirms that 80% of Nairobi National Park is well-fenced, assuring the safety of the entire city from wildlife. However, the animals are noted to be escaping through the southern part of the park, where water-logged areas and long grass act as their hiding spots. KWS is also urging residents to report to them if they spot any stray animals within their vicinity. They also appeal to Kenyans to be careful of misinformation and ‘fake news’ regarding wildlife being seen in their residents. This follows a recent allegation of three lions being seen near the Nairobi Women’s Prison along Langata road. The KWS assures residents that the search for Makena the lioness is ongoing and that the public’s safety is their top priority. As of Thursday morning, the team had not notified Kenyans and the residents of Rongai if they had captured the dangerous animal.
