- The United States is a land of opportunities, and as such, most people aspire to have a legal chance to live and work in the country. However, gaining entry to this country is an uphill task. One way people have successfully managed to gain entry is through the Diversity Visa, commonly known as a Green Card.
The Green Card Lottery is a program run by the American Government. It gives 55,000 immigrant visas each year to people worldwide. One reason people aspire to win the lottery is that it gives the selectees a chance to immigrate with their nuclear family.
When and How to Apply for a Green Card Lottery
The US government opens the lottery from the first week of October until the first week of November. To participate, you need to have cleared your KCSE and attained a mean grade of D—or be skilled in a qualifying occupation that requires at least two years of training or experience.
You will need a 600*600 pixel passport photo,240 KB on a white background when applying. If you wear glasses, remove them when taking the photo. Furthermore, don’t smile, show your teeth, or tilt your head. This applies to each of your dependents, the nuclear family.
If you are a married couple, play both of you and include your children. Children from 18 years old can play individually. If your child is older than 21 years, you can’t include them in your application as the parent.
You will be given a confirmation number; keep it safe.
When and How to Check for Green Card Lottery Results
So, after you play the lottery in October, wait for the results from the first Saturday of May the following year. Be ready with your confirmation number and access the official website to check the results. However, you can use your email to access your results if you misplace your number.

Be happy. You have a chance to get to America, but not so soon. If you have been selected, proceed to fill in the DS260 form as soon as possible. This form will help you receive the second letter inviting you for medical and embassy interviews.

Filling in the application form is free. However, if you apply from a cybercafé, you will pay for the labour/assistance. Try your luck; you never know. Ensure you give your email account that you use because if you are selected, that’s the channel they will use to communicate with you. Also, be keen to submit accurate details.
